Second Government Base Opened in Aberystwyth

The second of three proposed government offices was opened in Aberystwyth by First Minister Rhodri Morgan. The first of the regional offices was inaugurated three years back in 2006 in Merthyr Tydfil.

The new office has been completed at a total outlay of £20 million. First Minister Morgan said that with this inauguration, the county of Wales acquires a new position of prominence. He has also said that the people of Wales will now have better opportunities to bring the government’s attention to local issues and developmental needs. The presence of a regional shared office space in the locality will open up new and faster channels of communication between the locals and the administrative officials for speedy resolution of problems.

A planned third regional governmental base is yet to be opened in Llandudno Junction to offer the same benefits there. This project is expected to be completed by 2010.

The Aberystwyth office complex will have more than 500 employees working in it. Of these, about 120 will be shifted from locations around Wales. However, several new positions are being created in this office too. In all, with this office, the number and distribution of civil servant jobs around the county of Wales will be enhanced.

With various departmental activities to be carried out from here like rural affairs, transport, economy, and heritage, the office is expected to be fully functional, with complete staffing by mid- 2010. A total of 460 employees may be in place by the end of this year itself.
