Chop Pot

poker tournaments in live casino poker online rooms often offer more flexible options to players than online poker sites. One practice in particular is the proposal to “chop the pot” which means the players decide to divide up the prize differently than the casino’s original allocation. The amount of a poker tournament’s prize money is determined on how many players entered and what the fee they paid. After the casino takes off its share of fees, the rest is allocated to the prize pool.

Most poker tournaments typically pay out to the top 10 percent of finishers. So if 50 players enter, then the final five are said to “make it to the money” and can expect some share of the prize pool. However, once you get reach the final table and some players are eliminated, it’s not unusual to hear players talk about “chopping the pot” – most often taking some money off the top prizes to be distribute more players than originally designated. This happens most often as the “bubble” approaches – the last player to be eliminated before prize money

Once the final table gets down to the top finishers, three players or just two, there can be further talk about chopping the pot. Sometimes when the players chip stacks are closely matched, they will just divide the prize money equally rather than continue with the match, which at this point in the tournament is most often decided by luck than skill.
