Guy Laliberte – the Biggest Fish in Poker

Guy Laliberte may be the biggest fish in the poker sea. Laliberte was a street performer in Montreal in Canada before founding Cirque de Soleil and becoming a billionaire. Poker is one of his favorite hobbies, and he is one of the main reasons the biggest games in online poker run regularly.

Laliberte makes strong finishes in major tournaments from time to time, and certainly has a cursory knowledge of the game of poker. However, he plays against the best in the world at the highest stakes possible, and loses in a night what some people may not make in a lifetime. An owner of many multimillion-dollar homes, and a few million dollar cars, Laliberte can throw millions away in a single night of Texas Hold’em. Laliberte played the largest pot ever played on the show High Stakes Poker, a 1.3 million dollar pot against David Benyamine, where he was a large favorite, but decided to allow Benyamine to take his bet back and keep only the pot in the middle. It was controversial, and showed what kind of a player Guy is. A very compassionate player, but the play was seen as very weak. He said he knew how much the money meant to Benyamine, and wanted to give him the opportunity to not have to gamble for it, and he eagerly accepted.

In Barry Greenstein’s Book Ace on the River, he states that rich businessmen are the most sought after players, and among them, Guy Laliberte is one of the most frequent customers of many of the top professionals. Both online and live, games with Guy draw the best players in the world to play with one of the loosest players around the world of high stakes poker.
